CSC’s roots date back to 1982 as The Wellness Community, founded by Dr. Harold Benjamin, PhD in California, and expanded over the years to include over 25 individual facilities throughout the US and worldwide. The philosophy then and now is that people who see themselves as “patient active” consider themselves part of the fight for recovery along with their physicians and other members of their health care team.
Our own history as a chapter on the South Shore began in 2000 when Gail Mitton and Ann Allegrini opened up Pathways for Cancer Care in Hanover, Mass. Their mission was to provide various types of support and educational programs to people who had been diagnosed with cancer, and, to offer these services free of charge. In July 2009, The Wellness Community National and Gilda’s Club Worldwide joined forces to become the Cancer Support Community and in 2011 TWC-MSS took on its new name CSC-MSS.
Today, the many Cancer Support Communities throughout the United States and worldwide are dedicated to providing the highest quality emotional, educational and social support through a network of nearly 50 local affiliates, more than 100 satellite locations and online. CSC is the largest providerof professional programs offering emotional support, education and hope to people affected by cancer so that no one has to face cancer alone. All programs are offered free of charge to participants through the generosity of individual and corporate donors, grants, and foundation funding.
